LANKA. Assassination Attempt On 18 December 1999, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) attempted to assassinate Sri Lankan President Chandrika Kumaratunga. A female suicide bomber detonated as Kumaratunga left an election rally of her People's Alliance Party. Kumaratunga received injuries from shrapnel, including the loss of sight in her right eye. Twenty-one people were killed, with over 100 injured. Minutes later a second blast occurred at a United National Party rally. Twelve people were killed from the second bombing, with over 70 injured. Colombo was placed on alert as these bombings preceded the presidential elections scheduled for 21 December. |
